Would You Admit It?

Even if it were true that you had never read one single book in your entire life, would you be big enough a fool to admit it? Apparently so, if your name is Victoria Beckham. According to this article from BBC News, Mrs. Beckham claims never to have read a book despite the fact that she has "written" her own autobiography. I don't blame her for not reading that one.

"And some, including Victoria Beckham, claim never to have read a book at all."
The article concerns the debate over whether or not the decline in reading rates around the world is anything to be concerned about or whether books have been replaced by other reading sources. But I have to admit that it tickles me to have Victoria Beckham so readily confirm my previous impressions about her extreme shallowness. Thanks, Victoria.

  1. She must be trying to relate to her fan base...

  2. I don't understand this. How is it physically possible to go your entire life without reading a single book? I really do find that next to impossible to wrap my mind around. That's almost as hard to believe as it is that anyone in their right mind would admit to never having read a book in a national newspaper. How dumb can you be? But Mella's right, her fan base could probably relate.

  3. I forgot what town in England she's from, but Pablo once told me that she's a typical example of the people who live there. He is so good at that! All you have to do is tell a little about a person from the UK you've met, and Pablo will instantly say: "Oh, she/he's from ________, right?"

  4. I had a friend in college who told me he had never read an entire book all the way through, magazines, yes, but no books. I found it difficult to believe, but maybe he and Ms. Beckham are just more honest than others who don't read.

  5. I have two thoughts:

    1. Who the heck is Victoria Beckham?

    2. Publicity stunt!

  6. The good news: there have always been Victoria Beckhams

The bad news: they haven't all been famous

  7. J.S., that's exactly what caught my attention. NOT reading a book in one's entire lifetime must have taken great effort because I can't even imagine how she avoided this during her schooling, however limited it may have been. Even more shockingly, to be proud enough of that dubious distinction to mention it to a reporter, is beyond my comprehension.

  8. Bybee, it does amaze me how in a country as small as the U.K. there are so many regional distinctions that seem to last forever. People there tend to stay close to home for some reason. In my few years living in London, I probably saw more of the U.K. than most of its citizens who were amazed at the ground I could cover on a weekend or Bank Holiday.

  9. Sherry, I'm sure that Posh is not alone...but what makes her different to me is that she apparently believes this is a "good" habit. I'm not sure I want to call that attitude "stupid" but "ignorant" seems to kind.

  10. Dewey, I'm almost embarrassed to admit that I know who the woman is...publicity stunt? Maybe, but a poorly designed one, if so because it makes her look the fool.

  11. Nicely put, John. Celebrities today are a dime a dozen, and this is one of the cheaper ones.

  12. how refreshingly stupid. :)

though i doubt it is true. i agree with you sam, how did she get through school then?

  13. She never read a book for school? Never read a book to her kids (C'mon, some of them are only 5 pages long!)?

I feel like buying her a book, though I can hardly believe she's never read ONE single book.

  14. Aloi, this one obviously believes the old adage about there being no such thing as bad publicity...if she's ever heard it, of course, since she doesn't read books. :-)

  15. I hear you, Annie. I really don't want to believe that this kind of thing is even possible despite the fact that I suspect that some of the people I know very well have not read a single book since leaving college.

  16. How can you possibly get through grade school without reading a single book? She has to be exaggerating.

  17. She strikes me as being pretty much a fake in many ways, Syndi. She probably just thought this would make her seem "cool." That alone shows how brilliant she is.

  18. Maggie, she's faking her blondness, too. I remember the group taking off when I lived in London and she was definitely brunette with a lot more meat on the bone then she has today.
